Occlusal Splints/Athletic Guards

Custom designed occlusal splints are fabricated for many reasons: facial muscle pain, TMJ pain and fracturing/wearing/chipping of teeth. This whole group of symptoms is referred to as occlusal disease. Occlusal disease is becoming more prominent in today’s society and is a secondary factor in progressive bone loss (Periodontal disease). Occlusal splints are used to prevent further destruction of the joints and teeth while providing relief to facial muscles. Occlusal splints usually require a few appointments for adjustments in the beginning and can be adjusted as necessary for the lifetime of the splint.

Athletic guards are made of flexible plastic and molded to fit the shape of your teeth. They are recommended to protect the jaw and teeth during physical activity and sports such as boxing, football, basketball, or other activities where your mouth may get hit. In addition, these guards protect the soft tissues of your tongue, lips and cheek lining.

If you have decided a guard is right for you, the dentist will take an impression of your teeth which will then be sent to a lab to make a custom fit guard for you. In most cases, you can choose from a variety of colors and styles for your guard. On average, guards last between three and 10 years.

Dr. Cook is an authorized provider of Under Armor athletic mouthpieces. No matter the sport, UA athletic guards can help to protect your or your child’s teeth.
