What Is Sedation Dentistry?

Sedation dentistry uses medication to help patients stay calm and comfortable during dental procedures. At Cook Family Dentistry we offer two options: nitrous oxide (often called laughing gas), which you breathe through a small nose mask, and oral sedation using Triazolam, a prescription pill taken about an hour before your visit. Both keep you awake and able to respond, just much more relaxed. Local anesthetic is still used to numb the treatment area, so sedation handles the anxiety while the anesthetic handles any pain.
Nitrous oxide works almost immediately and wears off within minutes of removing the mask, which is why most patients can drive themselves home afterward. Oral sedation produces a deeper, longer lasting calm and is well suited for longer appointments, complex treatments, or patients with significant dental anxiety. Because oral sedation slows reflexes for several hours, you will need a responsible adult to drive you to and from the appointment and stay with you afterward. We do not offer IV sedation or general anesthesia in our office; if those deeper levels are medically necessary, we refer to a trusted local specialist.
