A CEREC same-day crown is a permanent dental crown designed and milled in our office during a single appointment, using Computer-Aided Design and Computer-Aided Manufacturing (CAD/CAM) technology. After Dr. Cook prepares the tooth, our Primescan digital scanner captures a precise 3D map of your bite in seconds. For complex cases, we may pair the scan with a dental X-ray or CBCT scan to evaluate the tooth root and surrounding bone. The crown is then designed on screen, sent to our in-office milling unit, and carved from a solid block of high-strength ceramic.
The material is monolithic ceramic, most often lithium disilicate (e.max) or zirconia, depending on the location of the tooth and the forces it will handle. Both are tooth colored, biocompatible, and known for excellent long-term wear. Because the crown is milled from a single block rather than layered by hand, there are fewer weak points and the restoration is bonded the same day, sealing the tooth from bacteria immediately.
Same-day crowns work beautifully for posterior teeth (molars and premolars) and most front-tooth situations. For highly complex cosmetic cases that need hand-layered porcelain for ideal translucency, Dr. Cook may still recommend a traditional lab-fabricated dental crown and will walk you through the options.

CEREC same-day crowns are a well-established, evidence-based treatment with survival rates of roughly 90 percent or higher at 10 years for monolithic ceramic crowns. Most patients experience some tooth sensitivity to cold or pressure for a few days as the tooth and surrounding ligament settle. A small percentage may need a bite adjustment within the first week if the crown feels slightly high.
Rare Risks & Complications
Rarely, a tooth that was already inflamed before treatment may go on to need a root canal afterward; if that happens, Dr. Cook can usually access the tooth through the existing crown. Allergic reactions to dental ceramics are extremely uncommon.
